Killing of Delta PDP chieftain has political undertone —Police

Delta State Police Command, yesterday, said the killing of a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and chairman of the party in Ward 4, Okpe Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Felix Okugbeni, had “political undertones,” adding that the police have arrested three persons in connection with the incident.

Okugbeni was killed last Friday in front of his house in Ughwagba community after the incumbent chairman of the council, Chief Godwin Ejinyere, allegedly paid him a courtesy visit to hint him of his intention to seek re-election as the council chairman in the forthcoming council polls in the state.

The incident has further heightened tension in the community, which has been experiencing leadership tussle between two youth groups, leading to the destruction and burning of houses by both sides of the divide.

Contacted, state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Andrew Aniamaka, said: “Going by the revelations received from the arrests made, the incident has political undertones, but that is not to say we are foreclosing our conclusion on that.

“In the course of investigation so far, we discovered that those arrested are not the only ones in connection with the incident, hence we have also launched a manhunt for other fleeing suspects.

“I can assure you that the suspects have been transferred to the Homicide Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, and investigation into the incident is ongoing.”
