The police in Kano on Sunday arrested five suspected Boko Haram members , including two females with firearms and sets of Nigerian Air Force uniforms at Gayawa area of Ungogo Local Government Area of the state.
They are Abba Mohammed , 20 , from Niger Republic ; Usman Buhari , 23 , from Borno State ; Iliyasu Abdullahi, 46 , from Gezawa LGA , Kano State ; Aisha Ya ’ u, 25 ; and Ladidi Yunusa , 27 , both of Kwana Hudu Quarters , Kano.
The suspects were arrested following an active intelligence indicating that the remnants of Boko Haram sect who escaped from the Sambisa Forest were regrouping in some states in the North including Kano State.
The Kano State Commissioner of Police , Rabia Yusuf, who paraded the suspects on Sunday in Kano , explained that the terrorists were planning to attack worship centres and other public places in the state before they were apprehended .
The CP stated that three police operatives who sustained injuries during a shootout with the insurgents were currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
“ The police team came under attack from these remnants ( of Boko Haram sect ) and they were repelled ; in the process , we were able to arrest five suspects- three males and two females , ” Yusuf explained .
He added that a police team comprising the Special Tactical Force , Special Anti- Robbery Squad Kano , the Force Intelligence Unit and other undercover operative units as well as conventional policemen had been on the trail of the suspects before they were apprehended.
Yusuf said, “ This joint team has been on the trail of the remnant of the Boko Haram group in various locations in Kano and its environs for some time . The Special Police Team has prevented several attempts in various places in Kano and its environs by this Boko Haram group to attack innocent citizens in Kano. ”
He added, “ All the suspects confessed to be active members of the BH group that were involved in several killings of innocent Nigerians in Kano and other north- eastern states. They equally volunteered confessional statements indicating the planned attack they were about to carry out in Kano and other north- eastern states. ”
According to the police , exhibits recovered from the suspects include, one AK 47 rifle ; 49 rounds of ammunition ; four magazines , pieces of Improvised Explosives Device ; two sets of Air Force uniforms , four Air Force caps and one hand smoke .
Others are one military boot, a set of camouflage uniform , a Volkswagen vehicle key, a laptop , an IPad , pictures of the suspects in military uniform and black masks .
